The Royal Welsh 1st Battalion has introduced with “great sadness” the loss of life of a 21-year-old soldier from a uncommon most cancers.
Fusilier Jack Wilkes of Tywyn, Gwynedd was identified with Burkitt lymphoma and have become too unwell to finish his Lance Corporal coaching.
As a member of 5 Platoon, B (Rourke's Drift) Company he first deployed to Tidworth Barracks in 2021 after which took half in a variety of abroad workout routines, together with in estonia in 2022,
His platoon commander stated he admired Fusilier Wilkes' intelligence, mischief and cheeky nature, which “made his life difficult”, in addition to making him tough to self-discipline.
He adopted a great-grandfather and a great-grandfather, who each served within the Royal Welch Fusiliers.
His grandfather spent 22 years within the Army Medical Corp whereas his father spent six years with the Royal Engineers.
“Fusilier Wilkes was a capable soldier in the field, self-confident, effective and intelligent,” 1st Royal Welsh stated in a press release.
“He thrived on this atmosphere.
“An aggressive and tough baby, who would certainly be a soldier anyone would want in their platoon in time of war.”
