An asylum seeker who sexually assaulted a lady has been jailed for greater than three years.

Fawaz Alsamaou, 33, of Lockwood, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, strangled and sexually assaulted her underneath a bridge in Cathays, Cardiff.

“It's really affected my social life and I don't go out as much as I used to. I usually suffer with my mental health but this incident has really affected me more.”

'It will need to have been scary'

“I can barely sleep and I have nightmares related to it. I'm working on getting over it but it's not something you can get over.”

“The effects have stopped me doing everyday things and made me stop going out with my friends.”

After the assault, she advised the courtroom, she didn’t return to work for 2 or three months due to anxiousness about being in public.

“The time I had to take off work added extra stress to my life,” he stated.

David Pinnell, defending, stated that regardless of his responsible pleas Alsamou refused to confess guilt.

He stated the conviction would lead to his consumer being deported.

Sentencing Alsamau, Judge Celia Hughes stated: “This was a horrific attack on a woman alone at night in Cardiff.

“She deserved to walk home alone at night without being attacked by you, a predatory man.

“You say you are a Muslim, but your behavior that night casts doubt on your faith.

“This must have been a horrific event for him and it must have had a lasting impact on his life.”

Sentencing Alsamou to 3 years and one month in jail, she stated: “There is a high probability that you will be deported after completing your sentence.”

Det Sergeant Alex Lloyd, of South Wales Police, stated: “We hope today's sentence will provide the victim with the punishment she was looking for.

“Stranger incidents like this are very uncommon, but when they do occur, we use all available policing methods, including media appeals for information, to bring the perpetrators to justice.”
