Trump has promised to reverse Biden's conservation and climate change policies when he takes office later this month. However, the new ban has no end date and could be difficult for Republicans to overturn.
Biden is taking action under the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act of 1953, which allows presidents to withdraw areas from mineral leasing and drilling.
However, according to a 2019 court ruling, the law does not give them the legal authority to overturn prior sanctions.
Trump himself used the regulation to ban the sale of offshore drilling rights within the japanese Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Florida by 2032. Biden's resolution would defend the identical space with none expiration date.
