Hong Kong's flagship airline Cathay Pacific has cancelled its flights. Two dozen flights A flight from town to Zurich needed to flip again due to “a problem with one of the engine parts”.
The firm says it’s now inspecting all of its 48 Airbus A350 plane and has discovered that defective elements in some engines must be changed.
Rolls-Royce has advised the BBC that the plane was powered by Trent XWB-97 engines.
Shares within the UK-based engineering big fell greater than 6% within the London buying and selling session on Monday.
Cathay Pacific mentioned the engine element that precipitated its plane to return to Hong Kong was “the first engine component to suffer such a failure on any A350 aircraft worldwide.”
“So far, we have identified several engine components that require replacement, spare parts have been secured and repair work is underway,” the airline mentioned in a press release.
“As a result, a number of aircraft will be out of service for a number of days whilst this process is completed and Cathay Pacific's operating schedule will be impacted.”
The airline expects to finish the inspection of its A350 fleet by Tuesday.
Cathay Pacific acquired its first Airbus A350 plane in 2016, fitted with fuel-efficient Rolls-Royce engines.
Rolls-Royce advised BBC News: “We are committed to working closely with the airline, the aircraft manufacturer and the relevant authorities to assist with the investigation into this incident.”
