E-bike lithium battery 'quickest rising' fireplace threat

According to the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, 136 fire related to the Lithium-ion battery caught in South Wales from April 2020 to March 2025, with 100 records in the last two years.

Of those people, the fire reported in the last five years:

• In the last two years, 30 people were injured with 24 of them.
• There was a fire of 49 casual housing, out of which 34 took place in the last two years. One of these incidents led to an ambush associated with the fire -related fire in the battery charger.
• Of the 136 incidents, 39 included an e-scooter or e-bike with 25 of these incidents in the last two years. 13 people were injured due to these, 10 of which have been in the last two years.
• There was a 16 accident accommodation fire in South Wales which included an e-scooter or e-bike with 10 of them in the last two years. In the last two years, five people were injured in the last two years due to these incidents.

In Mid and West Wales, there were 26 incidents associated with lithium battery from 1 April 2020 to 5 May 2025. Four of these incidents included e-bikes, while one included e-scooter. Three of the 26 incidents were injured.

62 incidents took place in North Wales from April 2022 to the end of February 2025. Seven fire during that time included an e-bike and four included an e-scooter, causing nine injuries.

A spokesman of the Electrical Safety First, a charity that aims to reduce the deaths and injuries caused by lightning in Britain's homes, said that the fire caused by inferior e-scooter and e-bike batteries was “tearing by properties”, which put life at risk and damaged the property “immense”.

He mentioned, “This fireplace is particularly harmful as a result of large quantity of vitality that’s launched if a completely charged e-scooter or e-bike battery fails, then triggering a course of referred to as thermal runway which is sort of unimaginable to cease after beginning,” he said.
