'Powerless and betrayed'
In a statement read out in court earlier, Ms McCready said her daughter felt “powerless and betrayed”.
“She just turned 19 and will always be a teenager full of life and laughter,” he stated.
“She trusted people to protect her and that trust was lost after what she did. She was very upset and scared of Michael Webber. She chose to lock herself in her car rather than go to the hotel.
“I noticed her change earlier than my eyes. She felt powerless and betrayed. That assault shattered her religion within the system that was presupposed to take care of her.”
Gunner Beck, originally from Oxon Park, Cumbria, lodged a complaint against Webber after the incident, despite attempts by senior officers to persuade him not to do so.
The investigation into his death found that the Army's handling of the complaint “performed greater than a minimal position in his demise”.

The court was told that the incident occurred during an adventure training exercise at Thorney Island, near Emsworth, Hampshire, in July 2021.
Webber, at the time a sergeant major, became sexually attracted to Gunner Beck after an evening of drinking while deployed for a training exercise.

“Following the report, the unit decided to take minor administrative action with you.

“Your career remained completely unaffected and you were promoted to the rank of Warrant Officer 1 in due course.”
At the inquest into Gunner Beck's death, the coroner said that Captain James Hook pressured Gunner Beck to drop the charge, and only reported it to higher command “when the cat was already out of the bag”.
At that time, Weber was given a “minor administrative action interview”, with no further results.
The inquiry also heard that Gunner Beck had also been subjected to “persistent harassment” by another soldier just weeks after the attack.

“This includes the Violence Against Women and Girls Taskforce and our Victim and Witness Care Unit, which provides independent support to victims.”
