The Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) on Wednesday arrested 64-year-old Maulvi Kaleem Siddiqui for allegedly being a part of an unlawful conversion racket. The ATS mentioned that his identify got here up in the course of the investigation of a case registered in Lucknow during which Maulvi Umar Gautam and others have been accused.

According to the ATS, Siddiqui was arrested from Meerut round 9 pm on Tuesday and delivered to the ATS headquarters in Lucknow.

Stating that it has constituted six groups to probe the matter, the ATS mentioned it has filed a petition within the court docket looking for Siddiqui’s custody. Siddiqui is the ninth individual to be arrested in an alleged unlawful conversion racket.

“During investigation, it came to light that Maulana Kalim Siddiqui, a native of Muzaffarnagar, who mostly resides in Delhi, is involved in illegal conversions. It was found that under the guise of educational and social organisations, he was involved in illegal conversions across the country and was receiving funds from foreign countries for the same. This conversion racket was being run in an organized manner and many popular people and organizations are also involved in this. It was also found that he ran India’s largest conversion syndicate and converted them by cheating non-Muslims,” the ATS mentioned in a press release on Wednesday.

It mentioned Siddiqui ran a belief named Jamia Imam Waliullah, which, within the identify of social concord, transformed folks by bribing them.

“It was also learned that along with the trust, Siddiqui also funded several madrassas and for this he received funds from abroad, which came through hawala and other channels. Through madrasas, the Maulvi talked about heaven and hell in the guise of giving the message of the unity of humanity and instilled fear and greed in the minds of the people, encouraging them to accept Islam. He then encouraged them to convert others,” the assertion added.
