Chantal Joffe's self-portrait along with her daughter Esme, titled Looking Towards Bexhill, is about on the seashore at St Leonards-on-Sea in Sussex.

A group of self-portraits created by “the leading stars of contemporary art” will go on show at a museum devoted to Thomas Gainsborough.

The 18th-century artist was born in Sudbury, Suffolk, and his childhood residence is because of reopen with a gallery extension in 2022 following a £10 million redevelopment.

The museum's govt director, Calvin Viner, mentioned the exhibition was a “remarkably generous collaboration” between the London-based Royal Academy of Arts and Gainsborough House.

Gainsborough was a founding member of the Academy and the self-portraits had been made by present and up to date Royal Academicians.

Other early Royal Academicians to undertake self-portraiture included Matthew Hone, who painted this model in 1768

A self-portrait taken in 1991 by Patrick Procktor (who died in 2003) exhibits him holding a paintbrush, and showing to be considering the place to put his subsequent brushstroke.

Mr Winner mentioned: “Artists' portraits and especially self-portraits have always fascinated me, whether they reveal or conceal their identity.”
