Third-ranked Simona Halep withdrew from the French Open on Friday as a result of a calf damage.

The 29-year-old Romanian, who received the title at Roland Garros in 2018, tore his left calf muscle on the Italian Open and stated it wanted extra time to get better. The French Open begins on 30 May.

“Moving away from a Grand Slam is against all my instincts and aspirations as an athlete, but it is the right and only decision,” stated Halep.

Hallep is a three-time finalist on the French Open. She defeated Sloane Stephens within the 2018 finals in Paris for her first main singles title.

“The thought of not being in Paris fills me with sorrow, but I will focus my energies on recovering, staying positive and coming back to court because it is safe to do so,” she stated.

Halep is the defending champion in Wimbledon, having received the title in 2019. Last 12 months’s event was canceled as a result of a coronavirus epidemic.

This 12 months’s Wimbledon event is scheduled to start on June 28.
