Gwendoline Hoare from Manningtree in Essex thought the opportunity of receiving a a centesimal birthday card from Queen Elizabeth II was gone when the monarch died on 8 September.

Gwendoline’s niece wrote of the shock on the BBC’s on-line tribute web page to the Queen: “My aunt, Gwendoline Betty Hoare, turns 100 today. For decades she talked about receiving a telegram from the Queen and was devastated to hear the news …but her telegram arrived and she was happy.”
