Amit Shah meets Naga leaders over peace deal

Home Minister Amit Shah held a gathering with Naga leaders on Monday relating to the lengthy pending Naga peace accord. The delegation was led by Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio.

“The Union Minister for Home and Cooperation, Shri Amit Shah met with a wide spectrum of political leadership of Naga groups led by the Chief Minister of Nagaland, Mr. Neiphu Riu, in New Delhi today. It has been going on for years… the Government of India’s efforts are to resolve many complex issues that are involved in the Naga talks.”

The assertion dismissed studies on attainable options as “speculative”, as talks are nonetheless ongoing.

The Naga political problem has been hanging in talks with the federal government for a few years with a number of Naga teams, together with the most important one – the National Security Council of Nagalim-Isak Muivah (NSCN-IM).

In 2015, the federal government signed a framework settlement with NSCN-IM to finalize the peace deal. Even after seven years this work is in progress. The NSCN-IM has been demanding a separate structure and a “national flag”, which has been rejected by the Centre.

In the dialog, Akshay Mishra, former particular director of the Centre’s primary IB, is known to have proposed a “cultural flag” to the group. NSCN-IM has rejected this.
