The doubles title on the National Junior Under-18 Clay Court Tennis Championships 2021 is the most recent achievement for Kolhapur’s Sandesh Kurale – popularly referred to as the ‘Big Server’ for his excellent work abilities. Partnering with Haryana’s Chirag Duhan, he defeated the pair of Munim Deep and Dhananjay Atreya 6-2, 7-5 within the doubles last in Chennai on Friday.

“I have never played with Chirag before but during the doubles we got our heights to our advantage. For example, when I was serving, he covered the front and covered a lot of the area. Even after a few steps, we were able to pick up the ball. This put our opponents under a lot of pressure. We tied the first set at 6-2, but due to some mistakes on our part, we could not finish in straight sets. Chirag has a lot of experience in playing doubles. We exchanged our knowledge and used it to our advantage,” mentioned Kishori.

While Kurale is pleased with the most recent title, he mentioned his singles matches had been affected by the expectations he had from his National Junior Under-18 win in Indore in April. “I went through the first round and I was 5-4 in set two of the second round match against Dhananjaya. I could have taken the game but I let performance considerations take hold of me and the match went out of my hands. My coach Manal sir helped me overcome this loss so that I could do well in doubles. Chirag and I kept up the game, winning rounds in straight sets to reach the final,” he mentioned.

The 18-year-old, who educated beneath brothers Arshad and Manal Desai on the Arshad Desai Tennis Academy in Kolhapur, is working extensively on the accuracy of his large actions. He mentioned that in preparation for his upcoming participation within the AITA males’s match, he’ll work together with his coaches to strengthen his psychological recreation.

“Service to the message is his biggest asset and we are working on it. During practice, we use the cap of a coin or tennis ball on the court as the object of its serve. The lack of a tournament due to the second wave (Covid-19) affected match practices but the determination of the message resulted in a doubles win. For now, we will work a lot on his mental strength,” Manal mentioned.
