BORI honored by Ministry of Culture for contribution to Buddhist research, conservation

Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute (BORI) has been awarded the 2019 Vaishakh Samman Citation. The award comes as a recognition for the establishment’s contribution in the direction of the preservation of uncommon books on Buddhist and Buddhist research.

The award, constituted and acknowledged by the Union Ministry of Culture and the International Buddhist Association, is given yearly to researchers, students or establishments working in Buddhism and associated analysis writings, disseminating the teachings of the Buddha and preserving Buddhist tradition and heritage.

BORI is a century-old heart of indological analysis and research specializing in Sanskrit, Prakrit, Indian regional languages, classical, ASEAN and European languages. The institute has a group of over 1.4 lakh books, of which 29,510 are greater than 8,600 uncommon books with manuscripts.

A Manuscripts Resource and Conservation Center operates below the National Manuscripts Mission of the Ministry.

The awardees for 2020 and 2021 embrace six students from India, Bhutan, Thailand, Vietnam and the UK, other than Dhamma writing for the promotion of Buddhist philosophy, the preservation of Buddhist artwork and tradition, and extra.
