Cricket Australia (CA) on Monday apologized to survivors of kid sexual abuse inside the sport within the nation, saying the board was exploring methods to assist the victims.

CA President Dr Lachlan Henderson referred to as the historic sexual abuse a “horrific issue” in an announcement. Former Australia Under-19 cricketer Jamie Mitchell earlier this 12 months alleged that he was “sexually abused” by crew officers throughout the 1985 tour of Sri Lanka.

“We cannot change what happened but we need to do what we can to help the victims. On behalf of CA, I would like to apologize to anyone who has faced sexual abuse while engaging in Australian cricket,” Henderson stated in an announcement.

He stated the board is encouraging states and territories to enroll to the National Redressal Plan.

“We are encouraging all states and territories to affix the National Prevention Plan and the CA Board is presently exploring different methods Australian cricket will help victims of abuse.

“While we now have a rigorous set of policies and procedures in place around child safety, we need to make sure we are supporting anyone who has experienced past abuse.”
