A microscope Charles Darwin gave to his son Leonard and which has been within the household for almost 200 years goes up for public sale in December, and is predicted to fetch as much as $480,000.
According to public sale home Christie’s, the instrument was designed by Charles Gould for the agency Carey round 1825 and is considered one of six surviving microscopes related to the British naturalist.
The date of its creation coincides with the time when Darwin was finding out zoophytes, organisms resembling coral and sea anemones.
“It’s incredibly backbone to look at it and see the subtle worlds that Darwin would have seen in the 1820s and 30s,” mentioned James Hislop, head of the Department of Scientific Instruments, Globes and Natural History at Christie’s. Reuters.
“Later in his life in 1858, there is a wonderful letter he wrote to his eldest son which states that young Lenny was dissecting him on his microscope and he said ‘Oh papa, I’ve got to have this for the rest of my life’. But there should be great joy’. It’s wonderful to have a family connection to Charles Darwin just before he became internationally famous.”
Darwin revealed his groundbreaking work “On the Origin of Species” in 1859.
The microscope will probably be supplied at Christie’s public sale of helpful books and manuscripts on 15 December, and is priced at £250,000 – 350,000 ($343,050 – $480,270).
“Charles Darwin is one of the biggest names in the history of science, and the collectors of Darwiniana (related to Darwin) are truly international in breadth,” Hislop mentioned.
