Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton will stick with Mercedes through the 2023 season after signing a two-year contract extension, the workforce stated on Saturday.
The seven-time champion is presently in his ninth season with Mercedes.
“It’s hard to believe that it’s been almost nine years working with this incredible team and I’m excited that we will continue our partnership for two more years,” Hamilton stated. “We have achieved a lot together, but we still have a lot to achieve, both on and off the track.”
An eighth championship would put Hamilton forward of Michael Schumacher on the all-time listing. Hamilton is presently 18 factors behind Red Bull’s Max Verstappen after eight races.
Team principal Toto Wolff stated that the powerful race for the title this season prompted him to finish the contract.
“We are enjoying our hands-on fight this year – and so we also want to agree to this contract early, so we don’t mind the competition on the track,” Wolff stated. “I’ve always said that as long as Lewis has fire for racing, he can continue for as long as he wants.”
The deal was introduced earlier than qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix. Hamilton led the second apply on Friday.
