Dirty and muddy playground, wrestling mats laid on under-construction platforms and rubbish in every single place: The Under-23 Senior National Championships in Amethi on Friday was underway in situations described by a coach as ‘soiled’ and ‘inhuman’ .

Hundreds of wrestlers from throughout the nation are taking part within the championship. In a video made accessible to The Indian Express, wrestlers are seen competing in a makeshift indoor area, with water and dirt beside mats.

“It is impossible to move around in this place, it is very dirty. There are flies and mosquitoes everywhere, we are worried that there might be some disease,” stated a coach.

Wrestling Federation of India’s assistant secretary Vinod Tomar admitted that the amenities weren’t good however attributed it to “unexpected rains” in Amethi.

“The place to eat and sleep is fine, but it has been raining almost non-stop since Wednesday morning, disrupting all facilities in the competition area. It is an air-conditioned, indoor hall and the facilities would have been perfect if it had not rained. All our preparations got ruined because of the rain,” Tomar stated.
