The UN Security Council has voted for the 193-member General Assembly to carry an emergency session on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on Monday.

The vote on Sunday to authorize an emergency assembly was 11 in favour, Russia opposed, and China, India and the United Arab Emirates abstaining. That was the very same vote on a decision Friday demanding that Moscow instantly cease its assault on Ukraine and withdraw all troops. But in that case, Russia used its veto and the decision was defeated.

Ukrainian UN Ambassador Sergiy Kyslytsya requested for the General Assembly assembly to be held underneath the so-called “Uniting for Peace” decision, initiated by the United States and adopted in November 1950 to avoid vetoes by the Soviet Union in the course of the Korean War.

That decision offers the General Assembly the facility to name emergency conferences when the Security Council is unable to behave due to the dearth of unanimity amongst its 5 veto-wielding everlasting members — the United States, Russia, China, Britain and France.
