The authorities on Wednesday instructed Parliament that Jammu and Kashmir can be granted statehood at an “appropriate” time after normalcy is restored.

Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai stated this in a written reply to a query in Rajya Sabha. He was responding to a query whether or not the federal government has any proposal to “restore” the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir and whether or not some efforts have been made to finish the year-long ban on varied modes of communication.

“Statehood will be given to Jammu and Kashmir at an appropriate time after normalcy is restored in Jammu and Kashmir,” he stated.

“In view of the constitutional adjustments and the bifurcation of the erstwhile State of Jammu and Kashmir into the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir and the Union Territory of Ladakh, within the nationwide curiosity and within the curiosity of the safety of Jammu and Kashmir, short-term restrictions on varied communication channels corresponding to Jammu Internet and cell companies had been resorted to in Kashmir.
