Hit-and-run deaths: Govt notifies 8-fold hike in aid to Rs 2 lakh

The compensation to the households of hit-and-run victims might be elevated by eight-fold to Rs 2 lakh in circumstances of loss of life from April 1, in accordance with a notification issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

The aid to an individual sustaining grievous accidents in a hit-and-run case will now be elevated to Rs 50,000 from the present Rs 12,500.

“The Compensation to Victims of Hit and Run Motor Accidents Scheme, 2022, will supersede the Solatium Scheme, 1989,” the ministry within the notification dated February 25 stated.

A draft scheme was notified by the ministry on August 2, 2021.

Under the scheme, the ministry has provide you with the process for detailed investigations of street accidents and their reporting together with timelines for various stakeholders for fast settlements of claims.

The authorities will arrange Motor Vehicles Accident Fund, which might be used for offering compensation in case of hit-and-run circumstances and remedy for accident victims.

According to the federal government knowledge, 3.66 lakh street accidents occurred within the nation in 2020, leading to 1.31 lakh deaths.
