India on Sunday assumed the presidency of the UN Security Council for the month of August and is ready to host necessary occasions in three key areas of maritime safety, peacekeeping and counter-terrorism.

India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations TS Tirumurti mentioned in a video message on Saturday, “It is an honor for us to preside over the Security Council in the same month as we celebrate our 75th Independence Day.” “India has simply assumed the Presidency of the United Nations Security Council on 1 August. India and France have historic and shut ties. I thank France for the help they gave us throughout our tenure on the Security Council.”

As a part of its new function, India will set the UN physique’s agenda for the month and coordinate necessary conferences on a spread of points. “A number of important meetings will be on the agenda of the Security Council, including in Syria, Iraq, Somalia, Yemen and the Middle East. The Security Council will also adopt important resolutions on Somalia, Mali and the UN Interim Force in Lebanon,” mentioned TS Tirumurti.

Apart from the maritime safety, peacekeeping and counter-terrorism assembly, India may even set up a solemn occasion in reminiscence of the peacekeepers.

Former Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations Syed Akbaruddin mentioned that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would be the first Indian PM to chair the UNSC assembly.

“In more than 75 years, this is the first time our political leadership has invested in presiding over a UNSC event. It shows that the leadership wants to lead from the front. It also shows that India and its political leadership are invested in our foreign policy initiatives. Although this is a virtual meeting, yet this is the first such meeting for us. So this is historical. The last time an Indian PM engaged in this effort was in 1992, then PM PV Narasimha Rao, when he attended the UNSC meeting,” mentioned Syed Akbaruddin.

Ahead of changing into the President of India, Pakistan on Saturday expressed hope that New Delhi will abide by worldwide guidelines and norms. “We expect India to abide by the relevant rules and norms governing the conduct of the Presidency of the Security Council,” a Pakistan Foreign Office (FO) spokesperson mentioned.

This would be the nation’s first president throughout his 2021-22 time period as a non-permanent member of the Security Council. India started its two-year time period as a non-permanent member of the UNSC on January 1 this 12 months.
