India to host G20 summit in 2023; Piyush Goyal appointed Sherpa for Grouping

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has been appointed India’s Sherpa for the G20, an influential grouping that brings collectively the world’s main economies.

Making the announcement, the Ministry of External Affairs on Tuesday stated that India will preside over the G20 from December 1, 2022, and can host the G20 leaders’ summit for the primary time in 2023.

The subsequent G20 summit is to be held beneath the chairmanship of Italy from 30 to 31 October.

Goyal has appointed India’s G20 Sherpa instead of Suresh Prabhu.

“Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution and Textiles Piyush Goyal has been appointed as Sherpa of India for the G20,” the Ministry of External Affairs stated.

Prime Minister Modi has been main India’s illustration on the G20 summit since 2014.

India has been a member of the G20 since its inception in 1999.

The MEA stated, “India will preside over the G20 from December 1, 2022, and will host the G20 Leaders’ Summit for the first time in 2023.”

India might be a part of the G20 troika (predecessor, present and upcoming G20 presidency) from December 1, 2021 to November 30, 2024.

According to the MEA, the G20 brings collectively the world’s 19 main economies and the European Union, whose members account for 80 p.c of worldwide GDP, 75 p.c of worldwide commerce and 60 p.c of the worldwide inhabitants.

The G20 member nations are Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, France, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States.
