Kerala cupboard approves invoice to permit authorities an higher hand in collection of vice-chancellors

The Kerala cupboard on Tuesday gave its assent to a invoice geared toward giving the federal government an higher hand within the collection of vice-chancellors of state universities. The invoice might be launched within the subsequent meeting session.

The transfer comes within the wake of repeated clashes between the CPI(M)-led authorities and Governor Arif Mohammad Khan, who’s the chancellor of all universities, over the appointment of vice-chancellors in numerous universities.

Recently, Khan had brazenly acknowledged that even after a search committee to discover a new VC was notified by the Raj Bhavan, he needed to re-appoint Professor Gopinath Raveendran because the VC of Kannur University. But there was political stress.

As per the clause of the Bill, the variety of members in search committees might be elevated from the present three to 5. As per the present rule, the three-member committee consists of a nominee every from the governor, the UGC and the college, for which a VC is being sought.

According to the proposed invoice, the state authorities can have two candidates within the five-member committee. One of the nominees of the State shall be the Vice-Chairman of the State Council of Higher Education. The proposed construction will assist the federal government achieve an edge over a five-member search committee with the help of the college’s nominees.

Former opposition chief and Congress MLA Ramesh Chennithala stated the federal government has a hidden agenda behind the proposed invoice. “The CPI(M) wants to bring all universities under the control of the party. This will end the autonomy of universities in the state. Already, the syndicate and senate of universities are controlled by the CPI(M), which is keen to illegally nominate relatives of party leaders in universities. The bill should be withdrawn,” he stated.
