McColgan wins European 10,000m silver

Great Britain’s Eilish McColgan gained the ladies’s 10,000m silver medal on the European Championships as Turkey’s Yasemin Cain claimed a convincing victory in Munich.

McColgan, 31, gained her first main title with a win on the Commonwealth Games 12 days in the past.

After ending second within the 5,000m at Birmingham 2022, Scott earned one other silver as she overtook Israel’s Lona Chemtai Salpeter.

Can kick with seven laps to win in half-hour 32.57 seconds.

Fellow Britons Samantha Harrison and Jessica Judd completed sixth and tenth respectively.

“I’m happy. I’m obviously disappointed, I would have liked to be European champion tonight – but tired, weary legs,” McColgan informed BBC Sport.

“It was probably one of the busiest weeks of my life at the Commonwealth Games. Such a great feeling and not much sleep. I found it hard to brace myself for it again today.”

He additionally ran the 5,000 meters in Munich, saying: “I think it’s going to be tough. Two days to recover and do it all over again but it will be my last track race this season.

“I’ll give it some thought, I’m positive I’ll be again. I really like racing. It’s been a fantastic season and so as to add one other medal to it, I’d be greater than proud.”

Germany is forward of France (9) and Great Britain (eight) within the medal tally with 10 gold.

McColgan followed in the footsteps of her mother Liz – Commonwealth 10,000m champion in both 1986 and 1990 – on 4 August to record the biggest win of her career.

In a hugely impressive season, McColgan also broke the European 10km, British half-marathon and Scottish 10,000m records earlier this year.

Although illness and injury hampered her World Championships medal aspirations in July, the 2018 European 5,000m silver medalist returned in emphatic form – delivering one of the pivotal moments of Birmingham 2022 as she beat Kenyan Irene Cheptai with a filled Alexander In front of the stadium. ,

At Munich’s Olympiastadion, McColgan comfortably took it upon himself to pick up the pace after the opening kilometer, and only halfway through, defending champions Salpeter and Germany’s Konstanz Klosterhalfen were able to keep in touch.

But Cain, the champion in 2016, made his stellar bid for gold with more than a quarter of the race remaining, turning away from the competition leaving McColgan and Salpeter to chase.

While they could not close the gap, McColgan was able to overtake Salpeter on the final lap, finishing in 30:41.05.

Earlier on Monday, Briton Scott Lincoln finished 10th in the men’s shotput final, while compatriot Sophie McKinna finished 12th in the women’s event.

In the men’s marathon, Germany’s Richard Ringer produced a remarkable sprint finish in front of his home support and defeated Israel’s Maru Teferi for the gold medal after 2:10:21.

Phil Seisman was the highest-ranked British athlete, finishing 17th in a season-best 2:15:17, Mohamed Aden 30th, Andrew Davis 35th and Andrew Hayes 44th.

In the women’s race, Poland’s Aleksandra Lisowska won 2:28:36, Alice Wright 22nd, Naomi Mitchell 25th, Becky Briggs 31st and Rosie Edwards 35th.
