Mexican Open: Medvedev beats Andujar, inches nearer to prime tennis rating

Daniil Medvedev took one other step towards prime spot within the ATP rankings with a dominant 6-1 6-2 second-round victory over Pablo Andujar within the Mexican Open.

The 26-year-old Medvedev, who can exchange Novak Djokovic atop the rankings if he wins the title in Acapulco, will play both Taylor Fritz or Yoshihito Nishioka within the quarterfinals.

He wanted simply over an hour to beat Andujar on Wednesday after defending champion Alexander Zverev was kicked out of the Mexican Open for violently smashing his racket on the umpire’s chair moments after shedding a doubles match.

Medvedev beat Djokovic within the US Open remaining final September to win first main title and, at his subsequent Grand Slam occasion, reached the ultimate on the Australian Open final month earlier than shedding to Rafael Nadal.

The Mexican Open is performed on the exhausting courts of the Arena GNP in Acapulco.
