The NHRC has issued notices to the Center and 6 states in search of an in depth motion taken report on the “continuing threat to various temples, especially the Devadasi system in the southern part of India”.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) mentioned it has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report on the system.
It mentioned, “Several laws have been enacted in the past to prevent the malpractices of the Devadasi system, but it is still prevalent. The apex court has also taken a strong stand in condemning the malpractices of dedicating young girls as Devadasis. “
