Onion, tomato costs elevated because of heavy rains, poor yield; Trend to remain until finish of December

Heavy rains since late August have triggered huge injury to market-ready crops, affecting product arrivals and high quality, with onion and tomato costs rising steadily throughout the nation.

Data from the Ministry of Food, Public Distribution and Consumer Affairs exhibits that the retail costs of onions and tomatoes have elevated considerably within the final one month. Onion costs in Delhi have elevated from Rs 33 per kg in September to Rs 47 per kg.

The common turnover of onions within the wholesale market of Lasalgaon in Maharashtra’s Nashik district has been growing because the third week of September. “The current trend is expected to continue till the end of December. Prices are also going to rise as demand picks up after the easing of Covid-19 restrictions,” Deshmukh mentioned.
