Pakistani journalist booked for linking ‘derogatory’ statements about Islam to former PM Imran Khan

The Pakistan Police has registered a case towards a journalist for making “derogatory” statements about Islam “not based on facts” to former Prime Minister Imran Khan.

According to the Dawn newspaper report, a case was registered towards Waqar Satti at Rawalpindi’s RA Bazar police station on Saturday on the grievance of a cable operator named Chaudhary Nasir Qayyum.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), the complainant alleged that Satti “insulted” Islam in a tweet towards the previous prime minister.

Qayyum mentioned Satti blamed Imran for a number of the statements which had been “not based on facts”.

“Imran Khan has not mentioned any such word […] Waqar Satti’s tweet is mentioned – in any of his speeches,” the FIR quoted him as saying. He mentioned Satti’s actions had harm his spiritual sentiments, in addition to these of hundreds of different Muslims.

A case was registered towards Satti underneath sections 295-A (deliberate and malicious act supposed to outrage spiritual emotions of any class with intent to insult his faith or spiritual beliefs) and 500 (punishment for defamation) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

Former minister and PTI chief Fawad Chaudhry mentioned the matter was about “using religion for insults” after the information of a case being registered towards Satti was shared on social media.

Satti works for Geo News Television.
