The Election Commission has determined to let go of sure perks and privileges obtainable to the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and Election Commissioners (ECs) together with the earnings tax exemptions given to them on sumptuary allowance.

The choice was taken after Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar held his first assembly on Friday with fellow Election Commissioner Anup Chandra Pandey.

“Among other things, the Commission reviewed the perks and privileges available to the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and Election Commissioners (ECs) including the income tax exemptions given to them on sumptuary allowance. CEC and ECs draw salary perks and perquisites as per Section 3 of the Election Commission (Conditions of Service of Election Commissioners and Transaction of Business) Act, 1991,” the EC mentioned in an announcement.

The CEC and ECs are presently entitled to a month-to-month sumptuary allowance of Rs 34,000 and there’s no earnings tax payable by them on this allowance. “The Commission felt the necessity of observing austerity in private entitlements.
The Commission unanimously determined that the CEC and ECs won’t take any earnings tax advantages presently given to them. It was determined to ship the proposal to the Central Government for applicable motion,” the EC mentioned.

They are additionally entitled to a few Leave Travel Concessions in a 12 months for self, partner and dependent family members. “Further, CEC and ECs will avail only one LTC in a year in place of three LTCs presently available to them,” it added.
