Sedition legislation ‘colonial’, is it wanted after 75 years of independence? Supreme Court requested the Center

The Supreme Court on Monday, whereas listening to a petition difficult the constitutional validity of the sedition legislation, termed it as a “colonial law used against India’s freedom fighters”.

“The sedition legislation is a colonial legislation and was utilized by the British and to suppress our freedom. It was used in opposition to Mahatma Gandhi and Bal Gangadhar Tilak.

Stating that it’ll look at the validity of the sedition legislation and sought Centre’s response on it, the highest court docket requested, “Is this law even needed after 75 years of independence?”

The court docket mentioned a number of petitions have challenged the sedition legislation and all might be heard collectively. “Our concern is the misuse of law and not the accountability of the executive,” the court docket mentioned.
