Southgate’s England are out of the 2022 World Cup after a 2-1 defeat by defending champions France in Qatar

Gareth Southgate will stay as England supervisor till after the European Championships in 2024, the Football Association has confirmed.

he stated that he was “controversial” about his future within the function following England’s quarter-final exit on the World Cup.

The 52-year-old, who was appointed in 2016, has led the Three Lions to a World Cup semi-final in 2018 and a primary Euro closing in 2021.

His present contract is because of expire in December 2024.

The FA chief govt, Mark Bullingham, stated: “We are delighted to confirm that Gareth Southgate will continue as England manager and lead our Euro 2024 campaign.”

Southgate officially became England boss in November 2016, following a two-month spell as caretaker manager following the departure of Sam Allardyce.

The former defender, who made 57 appearances for England, became the national team’s fourth permanent manager in as many years.

In the six years since, he has brought great stability to the England camp, building a tightly-knit unit of players off the pitch and on it a team seen as serious contenders for major trophies.

Southgate has so far won 49 of their 81 matches, with 14 losses. But his record of six knockout games in major tournaments as Three Lions boss is the same as England won 48 years ago.

But despite rising hopes placed on his team, Southgate has yet to deliver the silverware.

His team lost 2-1 after being led 1-0 by Croatia in the last four of the 2018 World Cup in Russia, while England were beaten on penalties in the Euro 2020 final after Italy progressed in that match. But was defeated.

England went into the World Cup by virtue of relegation from their UEFA Nations League group after three losses and three draws.

However victories over Iran and Wales, either side of a draw with the United States, saw England top their group and they easily beat Senegal in the last 16.

Their trip ended in a 2–1 defeat by France, with captain Harry Kane missing a late penalty, before scoring one to equalize Wayne Rooney as England’s leading goalscorer.

Southgate previously managed the England Under-21 side from 2013 to 2016 and was also in charge at Middlesbrough from 2006 to 2009.
