Steel ‘waste’ despatched to BRO to construct border street in Arunachal

Science and Technology Minister Dr Jitendra Singh on Wednesday flagged off 1,600 metric tonnes of processed metal slag railway rake for Border Roads Organization (BRO) ‘Project Arunank’ at Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh from Tata Steel’s Jamshedpur plant.

Virtually flagging it off, Singh stated that with this India has entered the “era of steel roads”.

The undertaking is being undertaken by CSIR-CRRI together with Tata Steel and BRO wherein processed metal slag mixture – a by-product of metal manufacturing – can be used within the building of metal slag street stretches in strategic areas.

India is at the moment the world’s second largest producer of crude metal, producing over 118 million tonnes of crude metal. Of this, about 20% metal slag is generated as strong waste and its disposal is a serious problem for the metal industries. This strong waste will now be used for street building. “This project is a perfect example of ‘Waste to Wealth’,” Singh insisted.
