Ganga Prasad Tiwari clearly remembers how her son Shardanand used to go to hockey apply each morning with only a cup of tea for breakfast.
“I never gave him a hockey stick or shoes. Forget about the kits, I couldn’t even buy fruits for them to eat. Most of the days, he used to go for training on an empty stomach,” he tells The Indian Express in regards to the troubles he was dealing with together with his Rs 1,500 month-to-month wage. Shardanand was first seen by coach Neelam Siddiqui, who was then working with the Sports Authority of India (SAI) in Lucknow.
“Once he got enrolled in SAI, we thought that now he would be able to fulfill his dream. But my income was still not good enough to get them hockey sticks and shoes,” remembers Ganga Prasad.
“The coaches gave him some previous poles and sneakers. He would tie his hockey follow ropes on daily basis earlier than sleeping as a result of it used to interrupt.
He obtained his first pair of hockey sneakers as a present from his childhood coach, Arun Yadav, when he joined the World Cup squad.
“This is the story of my son. He has played hockey his whole life with borrowed sticks and shoes. But he never gave up and never complained.”

Rani Tiwari, his mom says “Sapna jaisa lag raha hai, sab uski mehnat ka fal hai (It is a dream for us, It is all his hard work).”
Shardanand’s journey began on an empty abdomen. Now when he returns, his mom is getting ready the feast.
“Aloo ki sabzi is his favourite so when he comes again dwelling I’ll cook dinner it for him. But there are nonetheless two matches left and I do know we’re going to win the World Cup.”
