A stowaway was found within the entrance wheel part of a Cargolux cargo airplane that arrived at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport from Africa on Sunday, Dutch navy police mentioned.

“The man is doing well given the circumstances and has been taken to hospital,” police in control of Dutch border management mentioned in a press release.

Maréchaus spokeswoman Joanna Helmands mentioned the person’s age and nationality had not but been decided.

“Our first concern was for his health,” she mentioned. “It’s certainly very unusual that someone was able to survive the cold at such an altitude—very, very unusual.”

A spokesperson for cargo provider Cargolux confirmed in an e mail that the stowaway was on a flight operated by Cargolux Italia.

“We are not in a position to comment further until the authorities and the airline complete their investigation,” he mentioned.

According to Schiphol’s web site and flight monitoring information, the one Cargolux cargo flight to achieve Schiphol on Sunday was a Boeing 747 freighter that traveled from Johannesburg and stopped in Nairobi, Kenya. An airport spokesman declined to reply questions in regards to the incident.
