Amid protests by opposition MPs, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh on Friday reserved his determination to permit a non-public member’s invoice to amend the Preamble of the Constitution.

Kerala BJP member KJ Alphons moved the movement to introduce the Constitution (Amendment) Bill, 2021 within the Upper House which can amend the Preamble. While the Deputy Speaker initially allowed the introduction, RJD member Manoj Jha opposed the transfer and different MPs joined the protest.

“The amendment to the Preamble is an attack on the building of the Constitution,” Jha mentioned.

The Bill seeks to alter the phrases “equality of status and opportunity” within the preamble to “equality of conditions and opportunities to be born, fed, educated, employed and treated with respect”.

Rajya Sabha launched 30 non-public members’ payments in an hour. BJP MP Dr Kirori Lal Meena launched a invoice to represent a committee for preparation and implementation of Uniform Civil Code.

DMK MP Tiruchi Siva launched the Women (Reservation in Workplace) Bill, 2021 and TMC MP Derek O’Brien launched a invoice for efficient prevention, preparedness and administration of the pandemic.
