TMC MP Chhetri calls for minority standing for Hindus in Meghalaya

Citing the Centre’s assertion within the Supreme Court that states can take into account granting Hindus minority standing in the event that they deem so, Trinamool Congress MP Shanta Chhetri on Friday demanded within the Rajya Sabha that the group be granted minority standing in Meghalaya.

Raising the difficulty in the course of the Zero Hour within the House, Chhetri stated the Center has advised the Supreme Court that states can take into account granting Hindus the minority standing if the group will not be in a majority inside their jurisdiction.

If Hindus are in minority in a specific state they need to have the ability to set up and administer instructional establishment of their selection in step with the rights granted to the minority by the Constitution as per the Centre, she stated.

“I humbly urge the August House to draw the kind attention of the Home Minister to urgently direct the Meghalaya government to grant minority status to Hindus via a notification as per Article 29 and 30 of the Constitution of India,” Chhetri stated.
