A Cypriot group effort to pay tribute to the common-or-garden spud has gone viral, after a 5-metre (16 ft) tall statue of a Cypriot potato was in comparison with a large penis. The fiberglass reproduction, which prices 8,000 euros ($9,300) and sits alongside a important street on the entrance to the village of Xylofgau, has drawn widespread outrage on social media.

“Other countries have instantly recognizable monuments, now we have ours,” Euripides Avivaides, Cyprus’s former ambassador to the UK, wrote on Twitter.

Together they posted a collage including a picture of a Big Potato with the Eiffel Tower, the Statue of Liberty and the Hong Kong Big Buddha.

But residents of Xylofagau are scoffing on the derision, insisting that the beige knobby design named “The Big Potato” is a trustworthy copy of its important potato crop, Spunta.

Community chief George Taso mentioned those that noticed greater than potatoes within the statue have been responsible of soiled minds.

“That is, I think, let’s talk a mind,” he mentioned.

“Whether we like it or not, it’s potato, spunta, thin and long.”

Potatoes are a mainstay of Cyprus, identified for its wealthy pink fertile soil. Next 12 months Xylofagou is planning one other innovation with its favourite product; 800 kg potatoes are being fried in Chip Fest.

Tassou mentioned that the work on the Big Potato was unfinished and can be encased in native stone with a bench, a park and a small store, bringing the full value of the mission to fifteen,000 euros.

“It will be a milestone,” he mentioned as guests who adopted him posed for selfies.
