Delegates from United Nations member international locations are contemplating proposals for a binding international treaty to curb plastic air pollution.

The UN Environment Assembly, assembly Feb. 28 to March 2 in Kenya’s capital Nairobi, is anticipated to suggest a world framework to handle the rising drawback of plastic waste on the earth’s oceans, rivers and panorama.

“For the first time in history, we are seeing unprecedented global momentum to tackle the plague of plastic pollution,” stated UN Environment Program Executive Director Inger Andersen.

During preparations for the session, Andersen implored member states to take the chance to reshape humanity’s “relationship with plastic once and for all” by creating a complete international settlement to fight the issue.

Two main proposals have emerged throughout years of worldwide discussions about methods to scale back single use plastic.

The first, by Peru and Rwanda, requires a full spectrum method to plastic air pollution, protecting uncooked supplies extraction, plastic manufacturing, in addition to plastic use and disposal. It urges creation of “an internationally legally binding agreement … to prevent and reduce plastic pollution in the environment, including micro plastics.”

The proposal is co-sponsored by Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guinea, Kenya, Madagascar, Norway, the Philippines, Senegal, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and Uganda together with the European Union.

A second proposal, sponsored by Japan, requires a world settlement “to address marine plastic pollution covering the whole life cycle and promoting resource efficiency and circular economy,” together with reuse.

The key distinction is that Japan’s method concentrates on marine plastic air pollution, whereas the Peru-Rwanda proposal covers plastic air pollution in all environments.

Both proposals envision institution of a negotiating committee to finish the brand new plastic treaty by 2024.

If such a plastics treaty is endorsed by the UN Environment Assembly, Andersen stated it “would be the most significant global; environmental governance decision since the Paris (Climate) Agreement in 2015.”

The environmental group Greenpeace helps the Peru-Rwanda proposal’s full lifecycle method to addressing plastic air pollution.

“Over 140 countries have declared support for opening negotiations on a global plastic treaty,” stated Erastus Ooko, the plastics engagement lead for Greenpeace Africa.

“However, support for negotiations is not enough,” Ooko stated. “These countries should be calling for a legally binding treaty that will match the scale and depth of the plastics crisis.”
