Washington calls Peru election ‘truthful’ regardless of Fujimori’s claims of voter fraud

The US State Department stated Tuesday that Peru’s current presidential election was “a model of democracy” regardless of efforts by conservative candidate Keiko Fujimori to take out ballots alleging voter fraud.

Peruvians went to the polls on 6 June. Electoral officers are nonetheless evaluating some poll challenges, whereas preliminary outcomes favor socialist Pedro Castillo over Fujimori, daughter of jailed former president Alberto Fujimori.
