West Bengal Assembly passes decision for creation of Legislative Council

The West Bengal Assembly on Tuesday handed a decision supporting the report of an ad-hoc committee favoring the creation of a Legislative Council amid opposition from the BJP.

State Parliamentary Affairs Minister Partha Chatterjee thought of the proposal below Rule 169 of the Procedure for Conduct of Business of the House – ‘Report of the Ad-hoc Committee for inquiry into the advice for the creation of the Legislative Council’.

Of the 265 members current within the House, 196 supported the creation of the Council and 69 opposed it.

The BJP legislature social gathering opposed the proposal, saying the TMC wished to do “backdoor politics” to assist the social gathering leaders get elected as MLAs regardless of dropping the meeting elections.

The saffron social gathering additionally argued that the transfer would put strain on the exchequer.

ISF’s lone MLA Naushad Siddiqui additionally opposed the proposal.
