“I was present at the spot when the incident happened. Many people got washed away and the water was very strong. Hundreds of people were present at the time of the incident. Many are still missing,” he mentioned. Barik and senior Trinamool Congress leaders reached the spot to take inventory of the reduction and rescue operations.
Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari requested the state administration to expedite the rescue work.
“The sad news coming in the form of flash floods in Mal river during Durga Puja immersion from Jalpaiguri left many people away. A few deaths have been reported so far. I request the DM of Jalpaiguri and @chief_west to immediately intensify the rescue efforts and provide assistance to the people in distress,” he tweeted.
