WRU chief Walker hails first ‘constructive’ step

Nigel Walker was appointed because the WRU’s Director of Performance earlier than moving into the Acting Chief Executive function following the resignation of Steve Phillips.

Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) chief government Nigel Walker says a profitable vote for main reform of the board is the primary constructive step in altering the organisation’s tradition.

At a rare common assembly in Port Talbot over 97% of golf equipment voted for a governance change by the WRU.

The transformation will now be accomplished by the tip of 2023.

“The important thing is that this is a positive starting point,” Walker stated.

The modifications will now enable for the doubling of unbiased members (INEDs) on the board from three to 6.

This contains the introduction of an unbiased WRU president for the primary time, together with the PRB president, along with 4 separate unbiased members.

The rise of unbiased members meant that the variety of elected nationwide or district members would drop from eight to 4.

Walker stated, “I said before today’s meeting that it is impossible to exaggerate an incident like today.”

“We simply had to vote for change otherwise the future of Welsh rugby was in doubt.

“At the moment the feelings and emotions are of relief rather than joy or happiness; I doubt it will come. But we also know this is not the end of it, this is where the hard work begins.

“We should repay the religion the golf equipment have proven in us at present. 97% of the golf equipment voted for a change and that is the proposal that was on the desk and we’re blissful about it.”

“But we acknowledge now that we’ve to again up the phrases with actions.”

The WRU will now seek to address the gender imbalance, with the ambition that at least five of the 12 board members are women, including one of the top two jobs – chief executive or chairman.

Catherine Reid, one of three independent non-executive directors along with PRB Chairs Malcolm Wall and Henry Engelhardt, is currently the only female member of the 12-strong board.

“We’ve stated it is the aspiration to have 5 girls on the board,” Walker stated.

“We’ve included a head-hunter in that search and as a male I’m not presumptuous sufficient to recommend that we cannot have sufficient good females pushing ourselves, so we’re very hopeful.

“It’s probably one trip and we might meet three women, then four and five and then six or seven.

“The necessary factor is that the group is open to vary and desires to welcome individuals of all ideologies, each genders, social class, faith and every part in between. That’s what we wish Welsh rugby to be.

“It has gone on too lengthy and the warning indicators have been there for too lengthy and so they have been ignored.

“We had a real wake-up call and responded and the membership has voted emphatically for change. Now it’s our job to make sure that change is implemented.”

Former Professional Rugby Board (PRB) chair Amanda Blank stepped down from that function and the WRU board in November 2021 after saying she skilled misogyny within the organisation.

Aviva Group CEO Blank has stated that he was not listened to on the WRU.

Asked if somebody of that stature might come again, Walker replied: “The lines of communication have always been open.

“It’s not my choice to make him as a possible chairman and CEO, however I’m certain the thought will need to have crossed the minds of many.”

The board’s latest proposals come in the wake of a list of damning allegations Chief Executive Officer Steve Phillips resigned.

His interim replacement, Walker, was forced to appear before a Senate hearing after a BBC Wales Investigates program made allegations of sexism and anti-feminism within the governing body.

WRU nonetheless below investigation by an independent task force led by former judge Dame Anne Rafferty into the issue of culture within the organisation.

Asked whether he thinks Welsh rugby is currently institutionally sexist and anti-feminist, Walker said: “I’m not going to cross judgment on that.

“We’ve got a review which is ongoing and I’m sure Dame Anne Rafferty and the panel will consider that.

“If such is the view, then we’ve to simply accept it and transfer on. It is just not in my energy to say this.”

“We usually are not the one group on this nation going by means of this stuff proper now.

“If it is recognized that we have issues in that regard, we have already given and committed to fully implementing the recommendations.”

‘properly made remark’

One contributor to the EGM stated that Welsh rugby was the laughing inventory of world rugby, however insisted that blame must be positioned on the WRU hierarchy and never the golf equipment.

“It was a well made comment,” Walker stated.

“We are not running away from responsibility, we are responsible for running this organisation.

“We have not carried out in addition to we might have in lots of areas. Now is the time for change.”

The first step will be an effort to recruit an independent chairman, with Walker confident the WRU can achieve the December 31, 2023 deadline for implementing the changes.

Once the new chair is appointed, current incumbent Euan Evans will step down and a permanent chief executive will be recruited.

Walker was asked if he would relish the role full-time.

Walker stated, “I have never even considered it.”

“I’ve all of the issues I’m enthusiastic about, how lengthy I’m interim CEO is not considered one of them.

“It may sound twee, but it’s bigger than any one person, it’s about the whole game.”

Evans was reflective on being voted out of his chair function.

“I deeply commend them for firing me,” Evans stated.

“I have no doubt that there will be people who want to be the new independent chair of the WRU.

“We are lucky to be in Wales. Sometimes we take it too lightly how important a role Welsh rugby and the WRU play in Welsh life.

“It is embedded in our DNA and performs such an necessary function in our civic and social lives.

“I think this is a fantastic opportunity for someone with the drive, enthusiasm and skills to play a big role in our future.”
