Sharing comparable views, NDMA member Rajendra Singh stated that extra data must be shared.

The want for such an alert protocol, additionally advised by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), comes within the wake of over 2,000 annual deaths on account of lightning in India in recent times.

Such a excessive loss of life charge is critical on account of a single climate occasion like lightning in comparison with tropical cyclones, which declare lower than 100 lives a 12 months in India.

“There has been an increase in the frequency of lightning events in the last 25 to 30 years. One reason for this is the decreasing forest cover,” stated SD Pawar, a scientist and lightning researcher on the Pune-based Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology.

IMD scientist Soma Sen Roy stated that the chance of lightning and deaths is excessive in Northeast India.

“The elevation of the Western Ghats prevents moisture from reaching inland – creating a favorable environment for thunderstorms – ensuring low light events along western India. Whereas, the relatively low elevation of the Eastern Ghats does not hold as much moisture, which interacts with the high temperatures prevailing in eastern India, resulting in frequent and prolonged lightning strikes. The orography of eastern India supports the development of thunderstorms,” Roy stated.

Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh are the states with the best casualties on account of lightning, adopted by Odisha, West Bengal and Jharkhand. The deceased are principally males, who work outdoors in the course of the day when they’re struck by lightning, she stated.

Although thunder and lightning happen between April and September, the frequency will increase throughout June and August.
